Floating before sinking bag mix - carp bait

About 20 months ago I came accross a method that enabled me to present a dinner plate of any feed or basemix on top of weed or soft silt.  The mix pops up above the weed, dissolves slowly dropping a dinner plate of base mix ontop of weed before the pop up hook bait slowly descends and sit on the dinner plate - result, no more worrying about your hook bait being burried in deep weed. This new method has been trialled over the last 12 months and has accounted for many 40s, 50s and a 60 from a very weeded large diffifficult French lake. I use mainline base mix or method mixes and mix the base a few other ingredients, the mix then floats. The rig length is then threaded through the bag and a peice of PVA foam on the hook to stop the hook pulling through the bag on the cast. Once cast or lowered by boat the bag sits above the weed and slowly dissolves creating a dinner plate of mainline meth or base mix which the hook bait drops onto - brilliant method!

Development of this new carp bait

The bag mix in dry powdered form would stay afloat for up to 20 mins but that was to long so I added more carp goodies to the mix to reduce the buoyancy time.

I now had a bag mix that I could cast out the bag in any water that would present a perfect bed of bait around the rig area and more importantly around the hook’ over the last 18 months I have fine tuned the mix to do so many things while out on the bank.

Because the bag mix floats at first you must thread your hooklink through the middle of the bag to stop it floating up to the surface after the pva cobweb or solid pva bag has melted away, can be used with any carp fishing baits including boilies!

If you are fishing on a hard bottom like gravel or sand I recommend you use a shorter hooklink of around 4-6’’ because the bag mix will settle near to the lead, this will give you just enough rope for the hook bait/boilie to go right back into the fishes mouth.

On the other hand if you are fishing over bottom weed you should try increasing your hooklink, the beauty about having the bag mix floating is your lead weight will go into the bottom weed leaving your boilie/bag mix to settle on the weed. Perfect’ With deep silty waters try 12-16’’ hooklinks the lead will go into the smelly stuff leaving your boilies/bag mix to crumb down and settle in a far larger area of pre bait.

When fishing over weed or silt you can increase the size of the pva bag mix or decrease the size of your lead so your rig goes slower through the water, kind of like critically balancing carp fishing baits mix/boilie.

It doesn’t matter what hook, hooklink, lead shape & colour you use with this mix because when the mix is fully crumbed on the bottom everything is covered up with pre bait. Perfect’ I get asked is it the mix that’s helping me to catch or is it the hookbaits attraction, to answer the question last year I used no bait on my hook or hair what so ever on my right hand rod, the very first day I tried it I caught two double figure bream and two twenty pound carp all hooked way back in the mouth, over time this proved to me the fish were hovering up the bag mix and other baits on the bottom with confidence, you will find fish get caught by sucking in larger feed items this set up helps you get a hook well back into the fishes mouth.

The same applies when dropping your rigs in by a boat or casting in a big wind when you try to tighten up your line to set your indicators with having the bag floating above your lead for up to 10 mins it doesn’t matter if you move the lead a little and the bag mix will crumb perfectly over your rig, leaving the hook baits amongst the baits. The perfect method for carp fishing baits?

If you are fishing a snaggy or weedy water and you want to re cast straight after casting out because it wasn’t spot on’ your lead will come back much easier because the hooklink/bag mix was afloat of the lead out of harms way.

I have also found that when fishing a bottom bait with the bag mix the birds find it harder to pick up your hookbait which is a bonus when fishing around an islands tree lined margins.

Carp fishing bait - the best tip and an ultimate edge

This concept was designed to camouflage your rig and hook bait when fishing over gravel, to aid hookbait presentation in silt, on sand and in weedy waters. To add further attraction to your hookbait by forming a much larger pre bait cloud that the fish will find irresistible, to fish on a separate line mid water as a pre baits strategy to draw fish down to the bottom or to fish on the top in the warmer months with a floating carp bait.
